RELOCATION GUIDE TO DAKOTA DUNES
OBTAIN OWNER OCCUPIED STATUS:
For new homes or homes vacated for a long period only, contact the Union County Assessor’s office one month prior to your scheduled move-in date (or as soon as you can) to notify them that the home will be owner occupied. The Assessor’s office is located in the Union County Courthouse, 200 East Main Street, Elk Point, South Dakota, (605) 356-2252.
EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Use 911 for emergency situations. If you need to reach Dakota Dunes Security, call 232-4211 during office hours and cellular telephone number 253-3102 after office hours.
APPLY FOR MAIL SERVICE:
Contact the US Postmaster at the North Sioux City Post Office, located at 310 North Derby Lane, (605) 232-4206.
MAILBOX:
For new construction only, contact Dakota Dunes Development office at (605) 232-5990 to schedule the installation of your mailbox.
OBTAIN WATER SERVICE:
Contact Dakota Dunes Community Improvement District (CID) utility billing office at (605) 232-4211 for water and sewer service. Complete and return the application provided or complete and remit the online water application.
OBTAIN GAS AND ELECTRIC SERVICE:
Contact MidAmerican Energy at (888) 427-5632 to obtain gas and electric service.
ACTIVATE GARBAGE SERVICE:
When you are ready to move into your new home, you may call Orange City Sanitation at (800) 828-2645, Waste Management at (712) 252-1929, Independence Waste at (800) 515-0051, or any other contractor you desire. You will have an individual contract with them.
RECYCLING:
Available through some garbage contractors.
ACTIVATE TELEPHONE SERVICE:
You may contact Long Lines at 271-4000 or you may contact QWest at (800) 244-1111 to obtain local telephone service. If you contact QWest, you will need to tell them Dakota Dunes is a border city to Sioux City, IA. Your new area code for Dakota Dunes is (605). QWest may give you (712), as that is the way they locate you in their computer system, but this is incorrect. In the commercial area FiberComm, Long Lines, and QWest offer service.
ACTIVATE CABLE TELEVISION SERVICE:
You may contact Long Lines at 271-4000, or Cable One at (712) 233-2000, if you are interested in cable television service.
COUNTY:
Dakota Dunes is located in Union County, South Dakota.
COUNTY SEAT AND COURTHOUSE:
The Courthouse is located at 200 East Main Street, Elk Point, South Dakota.
DRIVER’S LICENSE:
You must get your new driver’s license within 90 days after moving to South Dakota. You will need your Social Security Card and your old driver’s license. You may be required to take an eye exam, a written test, and/or a driving test. For exact times and days, consult the local newspaper or call: (605) 773-6883 or in South Dakota (800) 952-3696. Driver's licenses are offered at the North Sioux City Community Center on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month, from 8:45 am to 4:30 pm.
CAR REGISTRATION:
You must register within 90 days after moving to South Dakota at the Union County Courthouse. You will need your title and mileage reading.
VOTER REGISTRATION:
You may register to vote at the Dakota Dunes CID office in person. You may register by mail, call (605) 232-4211 to receive a hard copy. You may log on to South Dakota Secretary of State Voter Registration Form, fill in your information, print the document, sign and mail to the Dakota Dunes CID office or the Union County Courthouse. You may also register to vote at the Union County Auditor’s office in the Courthouse. You will need your home address.
